Is pregnancy acne driving you crazy? When your become impregnated, you do not expect the words pregnancy and acne to be in the same sentence; however, that is not always the case. You should expect to get pimples on normally healthy skin while pregnant. The causes for pregnancy acne are the increase of hormone progesterone and the mothers level of hydration. The levels of progesterone in a pregnant woman smooth out the muscles inside of the uterus. The downside to this increased level of progesterone is that it also secretes into your skin glands which can cause acne.

Staying well hydrated, drinking a minimum of 8 glasses of water a day is a good way to keep your skin healthy during pregnancy. If you (and your pregnant bladder!) can handle it, drink more than the 8 recommended glasses. Drinking several glasses of water a day will continuously re-hydrate the skin which will in turn soften the effects of progesterone in your skin. Drinking water will also help ease any constipation issues that you may be dealing with as well, a common occurrence during pregnancy.

Unfortunately, there is no cure for pregnancy acne. If you become pregnant and normally have soft and smooth skin free of pimples or blemishes, you may be surprised with a sudden outbreak of unsightly acne. Keeping your hands and fingers away from your face and avoiding the urge to pop, scratch or pick at your blemishes will help heal them quicker. If your pregnancy acne is more advanced, your obstetrician may be able to prescribe a low dose of acne medication. This will usually come in the form of a cream and will help to dry out the oily blemishes.

Wearing little to no make-up can also help with your pregnancy acne. If your pimples are becoming a real nuisance, try applying only eye make-up and lipstick, avoiding any heavy foundations or blushes that are normally applied on the cheeks, nose and forehead. Pregnancy alone is difficult enough for a woman to deal with. Pregnancy and acne combined can be an even more frustration and painful experience. Doing what you can to keep your face clean and drinking plenty of water will certainly help aide in your pregnancy acne prevention.
